Music Quiz 2

Casey started this round of Music quizzing, and it’s quite fascinating. My own contribution:

Favorite song with the name of a city in the title: “Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago,” by Soul Coughing. All the Lucinda Williams songs mentioned by Casey and his commenters are great too.

Song you’ve listened to repeatedly when you were depressed: “Home,” off Sheryl Crow’s self-titled album.

Song that made you buy an entire album just to discover you hate everything on it save for that song: “Four Leaf Clover,” by Abra Moore. Pretty much everything since I’ve listened to at least clips online to see if the rest of the album sucks.

Song whose lyrics you thought you knew, but later learned you were wrong: The most recent instance of this was Rhett Miller’s “Our Love,” which I did not realize had anything to do with Richard Wagner until I tried to find the guitar tab for it.

Least favorite song on a favorite album: “Change,” on Melissa Etheridge’s Your Little Secret. Love the rest of the album, fucking hate that song.

Song you like by someone you find physically unattractive or otherwise repellent: “Firestarter,” by Prodigy. That reverse mohawk thing freaked me out.

Favorite song that has a lot of expletives: “Uncle Fucka,” from the soundtrack to the South Park Movie. I think a third of the usage of the word fuck in the movie occurs in this 2 minute song. And it’s an expletive-fueled movie.

Song that reminds you of spring but doesn’t mention spring at all: “Hey Jealousy,” by the Gin Blossoms.

Favorite movie soundtrack: Reality Bites. Clichéd, but damn good.

Song you like by an artist you otherwise hate: “Beautiful,” by Christina Aguilera. The girl can sing, it’s just that normally she chooses to sing really shitty songs.

Song you’ve been mocked by friends for liking: “Complicated,” by Avril Lavigne. And with good reason. But it’s so damn catchy!

Favorite covers: Melissa Ferrick’s cover of Patty Griffin’s “Moses,” Sleater-Kinney’s cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Promised Land,” The White Stripes’ cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” and Bjork’s cover of the classic “It’s Oh So Quiet.”

Favorite break-up song: “Song For The Dumped,” Ben Folds Five. Give me my money back, you bitch, indeed.

Favorite song to listen to in the morning while getting ready for your day: I actually tend to listen to entire albums because of the length of my commute, and my current favorites are Cake’s Comfort Eagle and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Fever To Tell.

Your current theme song: “Bright Future In Sales,” Fountains of Wayne. Because I’ve come too far and I don’t wanna fail/I’ve got a new computer and a/Bright future in sales.

Feel free to debate me or add your own in the comments.

Hey Ellen, so I was intrigued by the possibility of Sleater-Kinney covering “Promised Land” and looked for it online … er, at a music store where I paid full price for it … Anyway, all I could find was a live version of questionable sound quality. Is that the version you know and love, or did the girls ever record it in a studio?

The live version of questionable quality is the one I know and love. I’d be happy to send it to you and see if my version is of better questionable quality than yours.
