I listened to the end of the Red Sox-Yankees game on the radio on my way home tonight, and I realized that it’s been a while since I listened to the radio.
I pretty much stopped listening to music on the radio altogether when I bought an iPod, and I haven’t listened to a lot of ballgames since I moved away from DC.
The nice thing about tonight was that Jon Miller was calling the game for ESPN Radio, and he used to call the Orioles’ games until Peter Angelos was dumb enough to fire the best announcer in baseball.
My bitterness with O’s management aside, it was so great to be speeding along the 101, listening to David Ortiz win one for the Sox for the 2nd time in as many days.
To me it was almost more exciting to be listening than to be watching. When I’m watching TV, I’m always doing something else.
But listening, especially while driving really, really fast, is an exhilarating experience. Oddly, driving allows you to concentrate much more fully on the game.
Listening to Ortiz foul off about 15 pitches was so much more tense when I couldn’t see what was happening between pitches.
No fifty instant replays of each pitch, no replays of last night’s heroics. Just baseball, and and pure, unadulterated drama. I forgot how much of a relief radio can be.
I oughta listen more often…to games. I still refuse to listen to crap-ass Clear Channel stations for music.
Actually, it was the second time in one day! Who’s your Papi?! 🙂
