smile to take over the world smile to take over the world

I am a power procrastinator, and I like to share my knowledge on this subject so that nobody else gets any work done either, and I don't feel quite so bad for slacking off. So I thought I'd throw in a few links to interesting things on this page, seperated of course by category. All links should open in a new window. If you have a problem with that, please, bitch. Answering enormous volumes of cranky email is always a good procrastination tool. The links:

- Links To My Other Sites
- Links To Good Music Sites
- Links To Sites For My Favorite Musicians
- Links To Cool People I've Met
- Links To Other Ellen Shapiros
- Links To Fun Stuff On The Web

smiley man MY OTHER SITES:

  • http://www.mp3.com/EllenShapiro- Get free downloads of my songs and a couple of streaming audio bits from people with enormous amounts of space on their server (unlike me).
  • http://www.cdbaby.com/ellens- Buy Bridge Over Bottled Water on the internet for only 10 bucks! The advantage of these guys is that they take credit cards.
  • Somebody really misunderstood me- From amiright.com, a misheard lyrics search engine, someone actually had a really odd interpretation of Andy Warhol Was Wrong. top

smiley man GOOD MUSIC SITES:

  • buy.com's Music Section- Cheapest of all the major online retailers that I've found. Granted, its days may be numbered, but they're still open.
  • CDBaby.com- The nice people who sell my album also sell quite a number of other damn good albums.
  • Indiegrrl.com- Tremendous resource for independent female musicians.
  • Rockrgrl Magazine- These nice people invited me to showcase at their first music conference, and the magazine is quite kickass.
  • The Chicago Reader's Early Warning Page- Tells about concerts in Chicago months in advance. I would be far less broke than I am without these guys telling me about shows that subsequently sold out. top
smiley man MY FAVORITE MUSICIANS:
  • Sheryl Crow: New Album April 16th! Her official site is pretty good, and Sheryl Crow Paradise is really good but hasn't been updated in quite some time.
  • Melissa Etheridge: Her official site is well run, and they finally got rid of that godawful orange color scheme.
  • Liz Phair: Doesn't seem to have an offical site, and the most up to date page I've found is Ken Lee's Mesmerizing
  • Old 97's: Hit By A Train just merged with the official site, and has absolutely ludicrous amounts of information about this great  band.
  • Sarah McLachlan: Her official site is a bit hard to navigate, but good.
  • Alanis Morissette: Her official site is as weird as she is. In a good way.
  • Ani DiFranco: She finally launched righteousbabe.com a few months ago, and it's got tons of info and merchandise.
  • Melissa Ferrick: An excellent guitar player and phenomenal songwriter who I've really gotten into lately. Her official site is good, though the weblog hasn't been updated since September. Almost as bad as me. top
smiley man COOL PEOPLE I'VE MET: Mostly in Chicago and at the Rockrgrl Music Conference, but this will probably be updated regularly as I keep meeting a ton of cool people.
  • Ellen Rosner- An excellent acoustic rocker from right here in Chicago. She just put out a new album. You can check it out on CDBaby.
  • Holly Figueroa- Seattle-based founder of the aforementioned Indiegrrl organization. Currently working on a follow-up to Dream In Red.
  • Esmirelda- She's nuts and absolutely hysterical. Not for the faint of heart or the delicate of ear. From D.C.
  • Summer Chance- She's got an incredible voice and is a pretty goddamn good mandolin player to boot. She lives here in Chicago, and yes, that's her real name. Her self-titled album is really, really impressive. top
smiley man OTHER ELLEN SHAPIROS: What happens when you get bored and do a Google search on your own name and find you're not the first one to come up. If you know of another Ellen Shapiro not listed here, please email me and let me know.
  • The Author/Photographer: This Ellen Shapiro is a travel writer (which is really kind of odd, considering one of my best friends at school wants to be a travel writer), an author of two books about moving to New York City, and has a really cool photoessay on her site called "Faces of Nepal."
  • The Certified Practitioner Of Holographic Repatterning: I haven't the first damn clue what this is, but scroll about halfway down the page, you'll see it.
  • The Professor at NYU Med School: Director of NYU School of Medicine's Pediatric Urology & Reconstructive Surgery Program. Apparently she's one of the leaders in the field of Fetal Urology. Cool.
  • The Dentist: Now featuring the Brite Smile Center!
  • The Podiatrist in Richmond, Virginia: A certified wound specialist!
  • Five Guys Named Mike and Ellen: These guys, who have a site on "all the social happenings in the Boston Lindy Hop scene," have a friend with my name.
  • The Photo Exhibit Curator: Okay, I'm sorry, but her picture and bio description are just a little too eerily reminiscent of my stepmother, who is also an art fan, heavily involved in Jewish causes, and married to a lawyer. Too weird.
  • The Body Care Specialist: Our final contestant is from Bedford, New Hampshire, and offers Theraputic Massage and Skin/Nail care. top
smiley man FUN STUFF ON THE WEB: Just a random assortment of various ways to waste time.
  • Obscure Store- Jim Romenesko, a media critic who lives near Chicago (and who also runs the far more informative site Media News), posts this collection of links to bizarre stories on the internet from all around the world. The best one I can remember was the guy in New Zeland who had a $300 charge on his phone bill "for being an arrogant bastard."
  • The Onion- America's Finest News Source has had some incredibly funny stuff lately.
  • Things My Girlfriend And I Have Argued About- The cross-cultural relationship between a British guy and his German girfriend lead to some of the most bizarre arguments I've ever heard of, chronichled here by the guy. And no, his girlfriend doesn't mind.
  • The Public 8 Ball- They actually have a contraption that shakes a real 8 ball, and shows you the live results. Great procrastination tool.
  • The Spark- Waste hours taking their bizarre tests. Ask Jesus (which is an operation that takes a webpage and gives it biblical language) and the Burn Maker ("takes your words and cuts away the fat of propriety, leaving only the gleaming meat of hate behind") are always fun.
  • Stile Project- Stick figure kung fu. I shit you not. Highly entertaining.
  • Internet Movie Database- For my fellow film geeks, a fun place to find out about really, really obscure movies. For everyone else, you can find out about pretty much every movie ever made on here. Fun stuff. top

smiley man And of course, you can always email me for more fun stuff. smiley man
